Tirana International Airport: Week Against Violence Towards Women and Girls-staff with faces marked in red on 30 November

30 November 2018 – Tirana International Airport, in recognition of the Week Against Violence towards Women and Girls, will join the UN-sponsored world initiative with a symbol awareness day. On Friday, 30 November 2018, all TIA staff, passenger customer service agents, operations and administration staff, fire-fighters, managers and ICTS marked their faces in red as a call to one another, and also to themselves, that violence against women, as well as any other form of violence, destroys our common life.

Despite difficulties in measuring the phenomenon, data reported by the General Directorate of Police, and published by INSTAT in the Regional Statistical Yearbook, show that from 2013–2017 there was an increase in the number of reports of domestic violence. During 2017, for every 10,000 women in Albania 22.7 were abused. However, the statistics do not represent the whole story, as the silence is more powerful than the voice.

"TIA staff have enthusiastically joined this important campaign against violence towards women and girls. The red mark on the face, seen at the gateway through which pass approximately 9,000 passengers a day, will, hopefully, prove its value in raising awareness of the issue among those who see it on the faces of customer service staff, and for those who will ask about it. Red gives voice to the silence. This is the symbol that speaks at the Airport on 30 November," said Arlinda Çausholli, Director of Communication at Tirana International Airport.

This activity follows on from the initiative The Airport Is You, undertaken by TIA with the aim of bringing people closer to the Airport in an atmosphere where everyone feels part of this symbolic place, where one meets the familiar and the unknown passing through, travelling onwards or being welcomed, with art, creativity, architecture, social issues that belong to us all, and good communication.
