4. Vibrant nightlife
One thing is for sure, once the sun sets over Athens, you'll never get bored, as the nightlife is legendary. But be prepared for midnight as the bar doesn't open until 10pm. The possibilities are endless if you do.
Stroll around Monastiraki Square with a drink at 360 Cocktail Bar. As the name suggests, you can enjoy a 360-degree view of the fantastic cityscape.
Then enjoy traditional cultural Rembetica (Greek blues music) at Kavoras.
If you're still in the mood to party, you can spend the night at one of his party spots in Athens like an island in the trendy Riviera district.
5. Beautiful beach
You might not think of Athens as a beach destination, but there are plenty of sandy beaches to work on your tan. Few travelers know that less than 14 kilometers south of the city center lies a stunning stretch of sandy beach with blue flag-clean waters. The best place to soak up the sun is Skalakia Agias Marina, a beautiful bay of golden sands and turquoise waters.
If you like water sports, a day trip to Vouliagmeni Beach is a must. Not only is it one of the most beautiful beaches on the Attica coast, it has everything you need to enjoy a day on the water, from windsurfing and stand-up paddling to boat rentals.
6. Secluded Places
If you're looking for a change, hiking to Mount Lycabettus is the way to go. At 277 meters above sea level, it is the highest point in Athens and offers spectacular views of the city. It can be enjoyed at any time, but it is most magical at sunrise or sunset when the city is ablaze with twinkling lights. Listen to street musicians and enjoy the cool evening air while admiring the historic buildings at dusk.
7. Budget-friendly
Greece's recent financial woes have kept food, drink and alcohol prices relatively low, so you'll be surprised when the bill arrives.Local wine is very cheap and tastes just as good as the imported ones. There are so many things to see and do without breaking the bank. If you're lucky enough to stay in town on the first Sunday of each month from November to March, you can see many of Greece's major archaeological sites for free, including the Acropolis and the National Archaeological Museum.
8. Island hopping
If you want a quick stop for an Athens city break before going island hopping, there are plenty of options nearby.
There are many scenic islands within a few hours' boat ride from Athens. Dive and snorkel in the pristine waters of Agistri, relax in the natural hot springs of Kythnos, and hike the hills of Antos.
